Measures You Can Take to Prevent or Minimize Asthma Attacks Caused by Pets.

That cute little kitten or lovable dog that your child (or partner) can’t live without could be making them very sick. Sadly, as much as we love them, cats and dogs are often major asthma triggers for asthma sufferers and can send some to the emergency room. Contrary to what many people believe, it is the dander (dry flakes of skin), not the hair of the animal that actually is the cause of the problem. Your pet’s dander is shed continuously, but it is so small that it’s difficult to see. The dander is easily airborne and sticks readily to fibers- therefore it goes everywhere and gets on just about everything. If you have rugs and your pet comes inside the house, they are certainly full of it, so is your furniture and beds if they are allowed on them. If you cuddle or play with your pet, it’s all over your clothing too. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to get rid of Fido or Garfield.

There are a number of alternatives that you can take. Steam cleaning rugs and furniture in your home will help to remove the dander. Using a HEPA vacuum cleaner is also good. If possible, getting rid of rugs is the inimitable solution. Make sure your pet stays out of the asthma sufferer’s bedroom. Wash all bedding, floors and walls to remove the dander. Then use a HEPA air purifier at night in the bedroom with the door closed.

Take your pet to the groomer for a shampoo once a week or have a family member wash your pet outside to ensure that the dander level is kept as low as possible. Long haired pets should get clipped shorter. If your pet loves to show their appreciation by licking, this should be discouraged since their saliva will contain dander as well as proteins, which are also an asthma trigger for many asthma sufferers.

If you don’t have a pet but your friends or relatives do, even a short visit to their home can cause problems for an asthma sufferer, especially children who can’t resist playing with them. When you get home, get your child to take a shower and wash their clothing too to remove the dander.

Living with your beloved pet can be comfortable and symptom free when taking all of these measures. However, if your situation is extra serious and your pet still makes you sick, then you may want to try a natural asthma treatment.

Brainstorming a Good Vacation Spot

So you want to go on vacation - but how do you decide where? This is often one of the biggest problems, and can lead to family infighting. Everybody wants to go someplace else - but you need a way to choose.

First, you should decide whether you want to do a “repeat” or not. This will just sort of depend on your personalities - some people like to go to the same place. They enjoyed it, they thought it was fun, and they’d like it to be a “second home” of sorts. Others are interested in finding something new - the point of a vacation for them is to get away from their routines, not start up a new one. Make a family decision and stick with it - everyone should be able to find at least a few places they can enjoy that are either old or new. Second, determine how much money you’ve got to spend. This will be your limiting factor - you want to go within your budget, and even if someone really wants to go somewhere else, they’re going to have to make do with what you’ve got. Third, let everyone list three places that are their top choices. Talk them over once they are out there - don’t let someone get fixed on one place as the only place they want to go, because they’ll be disappointed if it’s not chosen. Try to find one where everyone can have something fun to do - figure out the interests of everyone in the family, and what they’d like to do on a vacation. Then see which of the places on your family list have the various recreational activities. If you can come to a consensus, then great - everyone will be at least somewhat happy. If not, think about agreeing to go one place this year and another the next.

Sure a home air purifier can look expensive at the beginning but when you carefully break down the costs of the purchase and see the savings that can be made year after year a home air purifier makes lots of financial and health sense. You will find some of the ways that you will be saving money on a daily basis by having a small home air purifier.

1. Cleaning Costs - Have you ever thought about how much it costs to keep your house clean. If you are the do it yourself type then there is the expense of cleaning products and your beneficial time. Cleaning products are very expensive for the average American household. Once can easily spend 30 to 60 dollars a month on cleaning supplies, let alone the cost of your time can really add up. It might not seem like huge savings after purchase an air purifier. However over a years time or so these small costs can really add up to a substantial savings. In our fast paced world however, many do not have the time or inclination to clean house on a daily or even weekly basis. These people often hire a maid to clean house for them. Well, with a good air purification system you will be able to cut back on the maid and have the cleaning service once every other week or less. This is a huge overall savings after only 1 year.

2. Medical - With a top quality air purification system you can feel safe and breathe easy in your home knowing that you are breathing fresh clean purified air. This purified air will also keep you healthy forget the common cold, allergies, germs and bacteria that flies around the normal house. Being healthy can be a huge saving also. You no longer have to pay for expensive visits to the doctor nor expensive medications to cure your sickness. You can also save on over the counter products like cough and cold medicines.

3. Time - By regularly using an air purifier you will save your own time. No this might not be a cold hard cash type of savings but you will save big on your own very collectible time. With clean dust free air in the house cleaning, dusting and general upkeep are all so drastically reduced that you can save hours each week by doing less cleaning.

4. Decoration cost - With a dust free environment in the house it is very easy to save big money on home decorating. The furniture will no longer be ruined by dust and therefore will easily last twice as long.

While a home air purification system might seem very expensive to purchase and get set up as you can see in the end it will save you big amounts of time and money. So the cost associated with buying the purifier is easily mitigated in the long run and over the years you will continue to reap the benefits of a clean, dust free environment. Not only will you be saving money you and your family will have peace of mind and feel comfortable knowing that your house is a safe, clean environment to live in. That piece of mind is really priceless.

Air Purifier - How To Tell If YOURS Is Any Good

Posted in Air Purifier on May 13th, 2009

Abstract: Electronic Air Purifier

These days it seems that everyone is gung ho about air purification systems. People with allergies, people with asthma and people who are just cleanliness freaks. It doesn’t matter how often you dust the furniture, mop the floors, vacuum the rugs or change the bed sheets, your home just isn’t really clean unless you have an air purification system.

But just how efficacious are these systems and are they all the same?

The answer may or may not surprise you. The truth is, not all air purification systems are the same. Some work well, some not so well, so the problem that most consumers face is how to tell if the air purification system they want to buy is the matchless one or for that matter, any good at all. Well, there are two ways to go about doing this.

The first way, and probably the most accurate is to first get yourself an in-home allergen tester. You can buy one of these things in just about any Sears store. Basically, the way these gadgets work is by measuring the levels of the eight most common allergens in your home. The process though isn’t as simple as it sounds. Most require you to hook up the device to a vacuum cleaner which collects the allergens. After that you then have to mail the bag to the lab for them to test. You would do this before buying your air purifier. Then the next step in determining if the air purifier you want to get is doing a substantial job is by buying one on the condition that if you’re not satisfied, you can return it. Most places will give you 30 days to try one out. You then take the purifier home, run it for the amount of time it says is required to make a difference and then rerun the allergen test. Send the next sample to the lab for testing and they will then be able to tell you the cogentness of the unit you purchased. You can then decide if you want to keep the unit.

Sounds like a lot of work, doesn’t it? Well, there is an easier way. Fortunately, there are independent companies that run tests on these air purifiers. You can easily find one on the Internet. While this does require you to take THEIR word for the findings, it certainly is a lot easier and quicker than going through the procedure above.

If you should go to one of these sites, what you will normally find is a chart with the following pieces of information. You’ll see the lab where the test was done, the air purifier that the tests were performed on, the country where it was tested, the type of allergen tests that were done, and most importantly, the percentage of reduction. This is basically the bottom line. If you read these results you will notice that none are greater than 99% reduction. This is because we don’t live in a bubble and it just isn’t physically possible to get rid of all the allergens, but 99% is very good.

Of course that all depends on whether or not you believe these results. Unfortunately, only your nose will know.
